What is a Phase 1 versus a Phase 2 award?

SBIR/STTR grants are typically divided into two phases: Phase 1 and Phase 2.

Phase 1 awards are dedicated towards helping teams pursue their technology up to a proof-of-concept level of development.

  • As of July 2017, typical SBIR grants are in the $100-150k range.
  • Phase 1 SBIRs typically involve 6-9 months of R&D work.

Phase 2 awards are dedicated towards helping Phase 1 grantees further develop their technologies.

  • This is a much higher level of funding, typically running in the $1-1.5m range.
  • This is typically over a year's worth of R&D work.
