What are some magic phrases to help me run an open-ended interview?

Try using words like these to run the interview. Practice active listening. When the interviewee gives you an unexpected insight, follow up and ask them to clarify.

  • “Tell me about the last time…”
  • “Tell me the story of…”
  • “You said X. Tell me more…”
  • “Why?”
  • “Why not?”
